Watches come in many forms and can be quite overwhelming, especially if you are just starting your watch collecting journey.
Here I list 5 watch types to have in your collection.
It is not essential to have them all straight away but over time and as your tastes change having these five will stand you in good stead.
Everyday Watch
An everyday watch, is designed to be versatile, comfortable, and suitable for daily wear. It strikes a balance between style and functionality, making it a dependable companion for your everyday activities.
For the everyday watch it should be a mixture of durable, comfortable & versatile, able to take a few knocks during the day and suitable to your lifestyle.
Even if you have a luxury watch collection an everyday watch is a must for those day-to-day tasks when you are out and about.
You cannot go wrong with a Casio where it is a G-Shock or F91W to one of their many many options or if you want to something a bit more elevated for the office then a Timex or Tissot is an option depending on your budget.
Dive Watch
A dive watch, also known as a diver’s watch, is a watch specifically designed for underwater diving. It is built to withstand the pressure and conditions encountered during diving activities.
Ok, lets be honest most of us are not going to be going diving to great depths with a dive watch but they are now the most iconic of all the designs on this list.
A good diver is robust can take a knock to two during the days as well as being versatile enough to consider as an everyday watch or if you are going casual for the day a dive watch is the perfect choice.
A dive watch is also a practical choice, it is legible and easy to read and of course has the bezel which you can use as a timer in many situations.
Divers are very collectable and of course the most iconic and desirable is the Rolex Submariner but if your budget does not stretch to that (most of us cannot) then a few other selections would be the Invicta ProDiver or Casio Duro to Seiko Prospex range.
If you are looking to step up, then a Longines HydroConquest will be up your street or the Tudor Blackbay range is a more affordable option if you need to scratch the Rolex itch.
There are so many options to find the right dive watch for you, a little bit of research will really go a long way.
Chronograph Watch
A chronograph watch is a must in anyone’s collection for many reasons.
A chronograph watch is essentially a stopwatch combined with a traditional watch. It features sub-dials that allow you to measure elapsed time, making it useful for timing events, workouts, cooking, or any activity where precision timing is needed.
Chronograph watches often feature intricate and complex movements, showcasing the craftsmanship and engineering prowess of watchmakers.
They also have a rich history, often associated with motorsports the Rolex Daytona being the most famous of them all but not to be outdone the Omega Speedmaster was the first watch worn on the moon.
If they do not float your boat, then Tag Heuer Monaco or Carrera are great looking watches and again have a great history.
The multiple sub-dials and additional features of a chronograph watch give it a distinctive and appealing look.
Apart from Rolex, Omega and Tag Heuer there are more affordable options from the Citizen Eco-Drive to Seiko Prospex to unique brands like Brew.
They are more playful than say a dive watch and there are so many interesting designs and variations there will be one that suits your personal style.
Dress Watch
While not to everyone’s taste a dress watch is necessary for those special or more formal occasions that will compliment your outfit perfectly.
They will add elegance to any outfit with their minimal designs, simple yet classy dials and slim profile.
Designed to sit nicely under your cuff, this watch is not showy but is made from high quality materials and craftmanship.
Dress watches are versatile and can be worn on various formal occasions, from business meetings to weddings, enhancing the wearer’s overall look with a touch of sophistication. The classic design ensures that a dress watch remains stylish for years to come, making it a valuable and cherished addition to any collection.
Some notable examples are the Rolex 1908, Cartier Tank or on the more affordable side try the Seiko Pressage, Orient Bambino or the aptly named Tissot Gentleman.
Digital Watch
While the other watches on this list are fantastic watches sometimes you need a little fun too and that’s where a digital watch comes in.
Digital watches are practical, functional, and versatile, making them an excellent choice for those who want something different.
Digital watches are easy to read, affordable and have different functions which makes them a fun and cool addition to any collection.
Most digital watches are low maintenance, quartz movements which means they only need the battery replacing every few years or even better they can be solar powered so all you need is the power of the sun or another light source.
The additional functionalities of digital watches, such as multiple time zones, countdown timers, and fitness tracking, make them versatile tools for various activities and professions.
Depending on your lifestyle this could even be your everyday watch.
Casio is of course the name that comes to mind when you think about digital watches from the iconic F91W to G-Shocks and everything in-between you cannot go wrong with a Casio.
Some other famous brands are Timex, Tissot and Garmin.
