When Tissot released the Tissot PRX back in 2021 they probably knew they had a hit on their hands, but did they realise four years on that it would become such a phenomenon?

We shall look at why the Tissot PRX has become a firm favorite with watch enthusiasts and non watch fans alike.

So why is the Tissot PRX so Popular?

Let us take a closer look.

Modern Classic – Genta Design

The PRX was an instant hit due to its Genta design, the integrated bracelet was a standout amongst the watch community and the comparisons to the AP Royal Oak were instant.

Based on the Tissot Seastar which was released in 1978 the updated version took inspiration from its predecessor and added a hint of something more modern to give it a more modern look without taking away from the original.

The minimalist dial, with its clean lines and subtle detailing, exudes a sense of understated elegance.

This updated version has captured the imagination of young and old alike and can genuinely be classed as a modern classic.

Tissot PRX Sunburst Blue DialAffordability Without Compromise

While most of us would love to own an AP Royal Oak or Patek Philippe Genta watch the reality is most of us never will and Tissot saw a gap in the market for a much more affordable and just as stylish watch at a fraction of the cost.

From the original quartz sunburst blue dial to the automatic waffle dial Tissot did not compromise on the quality of the watch at either price point and made it accessible to everyone.

The Bracelet

One of the most stand out parts of the watch is the bracelet, made from stainless steel the original 40mm starts at 24mm and tapers to 17mm with a butterfly clasp and push buttons for easy opening which is very secure on the wrist.

It features a combination of brushed and polished finishes, with the prominent surfaces being brushed and the bevelled edges or small details having a polished look, creating a more textured and sophisticated appearance.

When the light hits the bracelet, it really does give a touch of elegance that is a conversation starter for watch enthusiasts and non-enthusiasts alike.

The bracelet now has a rubber strap as an alternative and with their quick release spring bars it allows you to have several different looks.

Tissot PRX Wrist Shot GardenThe Iterations

Once Tissot knew they had a hit on their hands the only thing you can do is to make more iterations and that is exactly what they did.

From the original 40mm quartz blue dial an automatic version was released shortly after, with its waffle dial this was an even more desirable version and exactly what the enthusiasts were asking for using their Powermatic 80 movement.

Now we had something that not only reminded us of an AP Royal Oak it was at a price that we could all afford.

But this was only the start, Tissot had big plans.

In the years to come, Tissot have released various dial colours from green, black, gold, ice blue and gold to name a few.

They have even moved into gradient dials there really is a colour and style for everyone.

Not content they also produced a chronograph version which comes in in a blue or white panda style dial.

They have continued to use more expensive material including the fantastic carbon PRX aswell as using 18k gold bezels and yes these will cost you more, but you still get a lot of watch for your money.

One gripe that people had surrounding the original 40mm dial was it was a little too large for the smaller wrists with the end links overhanging.

Fear not a 35mm variant was released at the back end of 2023 for those wanting a smaller version but again they have not wasted any time in also releasing various colours, automatic versions and material types.
